Counselling is a form of 'talking therapy' that enables you to explore ways of living a more satisfactory and resourceful life and my aim is to work with you to help you overcome any issues that may be preventing this. As a counsellor I will listen to what you are saying and not saying, paying close attention to your thoughts and feelings, helping you to develop coping skills and resources to find your own solutions. Counselling can empower the person seeking help to take control of their life.
Sometimes it's just good to have someone to talk to who isn't involved in your life, and this can help to see things more clearly.
Counselling gives you the opportunity to do this in a way which is confidential, empathic, non-judgemental and respectful of your needs.
What is Person-Centred Counselling?
The person-centred approach is 'non-directive', believing that the client knows himself or herself best and has the capacity within themselves to create their own destiny and bring about desired change. The role of the counsellor is to focus on the client and the relationship and equal partnership between them, concentrating on feelings, attitudes and behaviours, thereby creating a personal growth promoting climate.
What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy?
CBT is based on the belief that the client's thinking processes affect how they feel and how they behave. This approach is more 'directive'. The counsellor values each client as unique, and will focus on their thinking styles and work collaboratively with the client to design strategies to change or adapt them, and to help them overcome issues which are preventing them from leading a fulfilling life. This work can involve setting personal goals and 'homework'.
What happens when we meet?
At the first meeting I will agree with you a strategy for working together. This will include the frequency and likely number of sessions that seem appropriate for your needs. Appointments usually last for 50 minutes.
